River of Tranquility
Located in one of the most picturesque and engaging Lisbon neighborhoods, Santa Clara rises above the colorful alleyways of Alfama, offering a front-row seat to the city's best river views.
Alfama, a city on its own during Moorish times, is Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood and the city's cultural hub. Fado's holy land and a charming labyrinth of alleyways, curled staircases and hidden patios, this hole-in-the-wall mecca will surprise and delight time and again.
See & Do
Living in Alfama is the best of all worlds.
Castelo São Jorge
For history buffs
The most visited monument in Portugal, the castle's origins are rooted in the distant 1st Century BC but only a short walk away from Santa Clara. Push yourself to a walk over its high ramparts or just take in the views over Lisbon's city centre.
For demanding melophiles
Nothing is as Portuguese - and yet so universally understandable - as Fado music and its melancholy and heartfelt tunes. Fado is also for cuisine lovers, as it's traditional for Fado music sets to be played between dinner courses. Look for the spots locals flock to.
Museu Nacional do azulejo
For design lovers
If you've walked around Lisbon, you know colorful, often geometric ceramic tiles (azulejos) are one of the city's signatures. São Vicente de Fora's Monastery, steps from Santa Clara, is home to Europe's largest collection of baroque tiles.
For architects (and biography readers)
Santa Clara's most prestigious neighbor, this magnificent baroque temple houses the tombs of distinguished Portuguese figures - think presidents, writers, famous footballer Eusébio or international Fado star Amália Rodrigues. Lesser known is the view from its terrace, so good it might rival your own Santa Clara balcony. But yours is still better.
Feira da Ladra
For treasure hunters
Lisbon's famous flea market - also dubbed Thieves' Market - is a must-visit spot to shop and browse. From ancient books to statuettes, second-hand army fatigues to grandmother's jewelry, this biweekly market caters to every taste.
Miradouro da Graça
For Instagram fanatics
One of Lisbon's Seven Hills, this Instagram heaven and terrace is one of the city's most famous viewpoints. The climb is steep but rewarding, and the area is filled with glamorous cafés, charming gardens and some architectural curiosities. Look for the hidden working-class “villas” of the XIXth Century.
